Who Is Visiting Wanderer?
Name: Nathan Hershley
Occupation: Writer/Photographer
Age: 36
Location: Kansas City, MO
About:
Visiting Wanderer is the culmination of my pursuit to teach my children the history of the area in which we live. We enjoy being outdoors and take any chance we can get to hike or camp. State parks, museums, and historically significant landmarks are among our favorite places to visit. Through the week, I am Head of Security for the company I work for and do not have time for much wandering around. Right now, I am focusing on the Midwest, but am not limiting myself to that region. Soon I hope to take a trip to South East Asia for my first international trip and experience Asian culture firsthand.
The concept of Visiting Wanderer began in April 2011 and was probably the tail end of a mid-life crisis. In high school, I almost joined the Navy so I could see the world but then remembered I did not like ships or boats very much. After school I was absorbed into ‘real’ life and became the best little worker I could be for whoever I worked for. After some time, I lost any hopes of being able to do any traveling. I actually had my mid-life crisis when I turned 30 but the travel bug did not visit again until I was 34. Now I am 35 and have a fire built under me to get out and see the things I want to see before I am not able to.
Slowly but surely I have been building Visiting Wanderer over the last year. Of course, I look at how many views my site gets, but honestly, I just write and take pictures as a record of where we have been so when my kids are grown they will remember all the places we took them. Making some money or getting paid trips would be nice, but that just is not what I am after, but I would not refuse them. This is more for my education and the experiences that I hope my kids will enjoy for years as they grow older.
